Powering Sustainable Development with Access to Information: UNESCO to hold “IPDCtalks”

18 September 2017

The role of access to information for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development goals is the theme of this year’s International Programme for the Development of Communication Talks (IPDCtalks), to be held at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, from 10:00am to 5:15pm on 28 September.

Global and community leaders, prominent journalists, media experts, civil society leaders and intellectuals will gather to listen to these short, inspiring talks on the role of independent and pluralistic media, as well as information and communication technologies (ICTs), in contributing towards the reduction of inequalities, boosting educational achievement and expanding access to clean energy, among other goals.

Prominent speakers include Salil Shetty (Secretary General, Amnesty International), Fatih Birol (Executive Director of the International Energy Agency) and Tarja Halonen (former President of the Republic of Finland) who will address challenges linked to specific Sustainable Development goals. Media professionals, journalists and activists will also reflect on key issues to foster public access to quality information at both the global and local level, such as data protection, anti-corruption, transparency and accountability. Speakers include Amy Goodman (American investigative journalist, host of ‘Democracy Now!’) and Gwen Lister (investigative journalist, publisher and press freedom activist from Namibia).

This is the second year running that UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) has held its IPCDtalks to mark the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
