Making the Sustainable Development Goals work for the Lake Chad Basin

10 August 2018

On the occasion of the 2018 High Level Political Forum on sustainable development dedicated to “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies”, UNESCO organized a side event presenting the ecological and socioeconomic issues of the Lake Chad Basin, in collaboration with the Permanent Missions to the UN of the five beneficiary countries of the BIOsphere and Heritage of Lake Chad project, or BIOPALT (Cameroon, Chad, the Central African Republic, Niger and Nigeria), the African Development Bank and Lake Chad Basin Commission.

The side event highlighted BIOPALT as an example of an innovative project of multidisciplinary cooperation and which addresses several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDGs 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 15 (life on land).

Throughout the event, the speakers discussed the regional challenges, notably on cultural, gender and resource management issues as well as the need to address the root causes of poverty.
