UNESCO is working with the Republic of Serbia to kick-start a new phase in the quest for media and information literate societies.
This responds to the global demand to enhance people’s critical information, media and technological competencies.
From the 12-13 September 2019, media and information literacy experts will gather in Belgrade, Serbia, in an international consultative meeting about updating UNESCO’s model curriculum on media and information literacy (MIL).
The second day of this international consultative meeting will include a high-level session and a ministerial panel, which is open to the public. Speakers will include,

Eight years ago, UNESCO developed the first comprehensive MIL curriculum for teachers, which brought together the interrelated and interdependent information, media, and technological competencies.
For UNESCO, MIL covers information literacy, media literacy and digital literacy. According to Alton Grizzle, UNESCO Programme Specialist MIL, “this approach recognizes that for people to be fully literate, they need specialised knowledge, skills, and attitudes to negotiate these three dimensions of today’s communications ecology – information, media and digital technology”.
The international consultative meeting in Belgrade will see experts discuss and make concrete inputs into what new content and competencies should be included in an updated version of the curriculum.
This is in light of new developments such as AI, the Internet of things, privacy concerns, and the spread of disinformation.
The experts will also deliberate, make recommendations, and reach consensus on draft global standards for a Media and Information Literacy Curricula.
This international consultative meeting on MIL is first in a series of regional consultations online and offline that UNESCO will support over the next 12 months. The series of expert consultation on MIL is intended to stimulate national debates and action to develop nation MIL policies and strategies to ensure sustained integration of MIL in formal, informal, and non-formal education.
