Every 24 January is “International Day of Education”, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to honor education and its centrality to human well-being and sustainable development.
To celebrate this second year of the “International Day of Education”, a discussion meeting on “Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace on the occasion of International Day of Education 2020” was organized by Secondary and Higher Education Division (SHED), Ministry of Education and Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU) on 25 January 2020 at the lnternational Mother lnstitute (IMLI).
The 2020 celebration reaffirmed the role of education as a fundamental right, a public good and an enabler of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It framed ‘inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all’ as a goal in and of itself, as well as a necessary means to accelerate progress to meet the targets of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
In this discussion, Dr. Dipu Moni, M.P. Honourable Minister, Ministry of Education, Md. Mahbub Hossain, Secretary, SHED, Ministry of Education, Secretary-General of BNCU, Mr. Abu Hena Morshed Zaman, Deputy Secretary General, BNCU, Ms. Beatrice Kaldun, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh and relevant representatives from Ministry of Education and Ministry of Primary and Mass Education as well as Bangladesh Bank delivered speeches on the importance of education as a whole, right to education and of teacher’s role in lifelong learning.
Under this year’s theme “Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace”, all speakers stressed the needs of strengthened global cooperation and collective action to achieve SDG 4 in Bangladesh to ensure quality education for all.
