The fourteenth ordinary session of the Governing Board of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) took place on 26 and 27 March 2019 at UNESCO Headquarters. The meeting was attended by Rutilia Calderón (Honduras), Ligia Melo de Cardona (Dominican Republic), Rossana de Souza e Silva (Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities and Chair of the Board), Andrew Augustine (Grenada), Luis Bonilla (Venezuela), Alfonso Fuentes Soria (Guatemala), Roberto Moreno Godoy (Guatemalan Rectors Forum) and Jamaica's Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Alando Torrelonge.
Also present were Francesc Pedró, representing UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Education, Peter Wells, Chief of UNESCO's Section for Higher Education, and Paz Portales, a programme specialist also attached to this section.
The Governing Council also had the opportunity to hear the intervention of the Deputy Director of UNESCO for the Education Sector, Ms Stefania Giannini, who presented a vision of Higher Education in the context of Agenda 2030, reaffirming with her intervention the leading role of Higher Education for the Organization, and responding vividly to the questions posed by the advisers.
Likewise, and as stated in the agenda, the Governing Council dedicated the meeting to a review of the results and lessons learned from the III Regional Conference on Higher Education (held in Córdoba, Argentina, in June 2018) and the presentation of the Management Report of IESALC 2011 - 2018, among others.
The next ordinary session of the Governing Council was tentatively scheduled for September of this year and will take place in Saint George's, an invitation that was generously extended with courtesy by the representative of Grenada and vice-president of the Council, Andrew Augustine.
