Fourth issue of Women and Media in the Maghreb newsletter launched
As a follow-up to the First Global Forum on Media and Gender held in Bangkok from 2 to 5 December 2013, the fourth issue of the newsletter “Women and Media in the Maghreb” focuses on the recommendations made by the Maghreb countries to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment in and through the media.
The establishment, during the First Global Forum on Media and Gender, of the Global Alliance on Media and Gender, was a milestone in UNESCO’s advocacy efforts for gender equality in and through the media. The Global Alliance took its first step by issuing several recommendations that should be implemented by all its members in order to attain its overall objective to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Recommendations compiled on this fourth issue of Women and Media in the Maghreb are mainly related to women’s access to decision making positions in media organizations and the promotion of a positive, non-stereotypical and balanced representation of women across all media.
This newsletter is published every trimester within the framework of UNESCO’s global action to promote an enabling environment for freedom of expression in Arab countries funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. It seeks to be an advocacy tool by encouraging women’s voices as well as debates on the role of media to spread gender equality culture.
UNESCO’s Office in Rabat invites all media professionals, researchers, teachers and gender advocates to send their contributions to the newsletter.
