First Meeting of the three governing bodies of UNESCO
In the framework of 189EX/Decision 11.8 instituting a regular consultation mechanism between the heads of the three institutional organs of UNESCO, the President of the General Conference, Vice-Minister Hao Ping, the President of the Executive Board, Ambassador Mohammed Amr and the Director-General, Ms. Irina Bokova, held today their first coordination meeting of the biennium.
On this occasion, they reviewed issues of common interest and the overall situation of the Organization. The meeting allowed for a fruitful exchange on relations with Member States, the planning of information meetings with Permanent Delegations on strategic priority themes, the review of important events and activities at UNESCO in the coming months, the visibility of UNESCO's work at the field level, and the forthcoming External Auditor's review on the governance of UNESCO, its funds and programmes.
The encounter was also an opportunity to exchange views on the main issues discussed during the information meeting of the Executive Board, which took place on 12 February. Concerning the need to enhance the visibility of UNESCO operational activities on the ground, it was agreed that field directors would be invited periodically to make presentations during sessions of the governing bodies or at information meetings.
The three heads of the UNESCO institutional organs concluded on the need to pursue these useful consultations at regular intervals in order to strengthen the effectiveness and efficiency of the Organization.
