On 14th of November 2016, the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic and the Khartoum office of UNESCO signed an Agreement entrusting UNESCO to implement the project “Promoting human development and civic virtues among the Sudanese rural communities: supporting the rural radio broadcasting in the Eastern States”. The Agreement was signed in Khartoum by the Ambassador of Italy to Sudan, H.E. Mr. Fabrizio Lobasso, the Head of Office of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Sudan (AICS), Mr. Vincenzo Racalbuto, and the Head of Khartoum office and UNESCO Representative to Sudan, H.E. Mr. Pavel Kroupkine. The ceremony was honored by the top officials of the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Sudan, the Sudan Radio and TV Corporation, and the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture. The initiative aims at strengthening the social inclusion in the communities through the developing of rural radio in terms of equipment, news and educational contents and decrease the amount of illiterate groups.
The geographical focus of the program will be in the Eastern States od Sudan, where the Italian Cooperation is already working on several sectors of cooperation (health- poverty alleviation- gender equality-migration).
The project is designed to contribute to the human and social development of the Eastern States of Sudan (Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref) through the strengthening the capacities of the rural radio broadcasting. The project supports the Sudanese Ministry of Information and the Sudanese National Radio – both federal and state levels – in developing the so called Community Radio Services – via strengthening the capacities of broadcasting of relevant teams of journalists and content producers, upgrading the equipment and enriching educative contents of the radio transmissions in order to spread the values of civic virtue and global citizenship among the rural population of the mentioned states, and to disseminate among them the best practices and principles of sustainable development with respect to the gender equality and environment issues. Project plans to use local languages of the Eastern Sudanese minorities for the developed transmissions. The duration of the project is one year, the total budget – 300,000 euros.
Project contributes to the SDGs 1-9, 11, 13, 15, 16 through spreading the appropriate knowledge among the rural population of the Eastern states of Sudan.
