Education at the Center of Director-General’s Official Visits to Africa

One month after attending the celebrations of the 21st Summit of the African Union and its 50th Anniversary where she addressed African Youth on the General History of Africa and African renaissance, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, once again will put education at the center of her official visits to Gabon, Ghana, Malawi and Congo from 5 to 13 July 2013.

In the Republic of Gabon, the Director-General will take part in the Albert Schweitzer Hospital Centennial Symposium. The Government of Gabon is organizing this event to celebrate the legacy of one the 20th century’s greatest humanitarians and Nobel Prize 1952. The Director-General will participate in a debate with Michel Sidibé, head of UNAIDS, on the importance of Education to combat HIV/AIDS and on the research on Malaria and Tuberculosis supported by the Albert Schweitzer Hospital.

Irina Bokova will also launch the second phase of UNESCO’s Capacity Development for Education for All (CapEFA) In Malawi, and she is also expected to launch UNESCO’s project on teacher training in the Republic of Congo, with the objective to provide quality training to 3000 teachers across the country. In Ghana, the Director-General will highlight the efforts to foster the African renaissance as well as higher education challenges in Africa in a meeting with University in Cape Coast.

During her visits, the Director General is expected to meet the President of the Republic of Gabon, H.E. Ali Bongo Ondimba, the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani and the President of the Republic of Malawi, H.E. Joyce Banda.

On July 12th, Irina Bokova will emphasize the role of cultural industries and take part in opening the 9th edition of the Pan African Music Festival (FESPAM), held in Brazzaville in the presence of the President of the Republic, H.E. Denis Sassou-N’Guesso. 

She will meet with several Heads of Governments as well as Ministers working in the fields of competences of the Organization.
