The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today called for light to be shed on the cause of death of Muhammad Yusuf, an Indonesian reporter who died in detention on 10 June.
“I condemn the killing of Muhammad Yusuf,” said the Director-General, “and I call on the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.”
Muhammad Yusuf died after spending five weeks in detention while awaiting trial on charges of breaking Indonesia’s laws on hate speech and defamation. Yusuf, whose articles were published on the Kemajuan Rakyat and Berantas News websites, was charged in connection with his reporting on a local land issues involving a major palm oil company.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
