Director-General Urges investigation into Killing of Journalist Tyron Brown in Liberia

25 April 2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today condemned the killing of video journalist Tyron Brown whose body was found in a suburb of the Liberian capital, Monrovia, on 16 April.

“I condemn the killing of Tyron Brown,” said the Director-General. “I call on the Liberian authorities to investigate and bring to trial the perpetrators of this murder that is also a crime against freedom of expression and press freedom. Journalists must not fear for their lives as they carry out their work, which is essential to democracy and rule of law.”

Brown worked as a camera operator and video editor for Super FM and Super Television.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
