The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, participated in different UN inter-agency activities prior to the opening of the 2013 UN Chief Executives Board (CEB) Spring Session in Madrid.
She attended the meeting of the UN Development Group which focused on the support to be provided to the Resident Coordinators network.
She then chaired the Committee of Co-Sponsoring Organizations of UNAIDS which covered issues related to the post-2015 development agenda and the required budgetary level for UNAIDS. She emphasized in particular the necessity to maintain the efforts in achieving the MDGs which shouldn’t be overshadowed by the preparation of the post 2015 agenda.
She also undertook preparatory consultations on the CEB Review process, which she is co-leading with the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) at the request of the Secretary-General.
The above meetings were also an opportunity to discuss major activities that UNESCO is helping to steer forward at the UN level such as the Secretary-General’s Global Education First Initiative, the Scientific Advisory Board and the Oceans Compact.
Finally, Ms Bokova attended the event to mark the 1000 days remaining before the Millennium Development Goals deadline with the participation of the Prime Minister of Spain and the UN Secretary-General.
