Director-General condemns murder of radio journalist Eduardo Dizon in the Philippines

Paris, France

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has welcomed the announcement of an investigation into the killing of radio broadcaster Eduardo Dizon, in Kidapawan City, in the southern Philippines on 10 July.

“I condemn the murder of Eduardo Dizon,” said the Director-General. “I welcome the authorities’ efforts to identify the perpetrators of this heinous attack and trust they will be brought to trial, in the interest of justice, freedom of expression and press freedom.”

Two unidentified attackers riding a motorcycle shot Eduardo Dizon dead as he was driving back home after his evening programme on Brigada News FM in which he regularly denounced crime and corruption in the region.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
