Director-General condemns murder of newspaper journalist Mario Gómez in Mexico

11 October 2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of newspaper journalist Mario Gómez on 21 September in Yajalón, a city in the state of Chiapas in Southern Mexico.

“I condemn the killing of Mario Gómez in Mexico,” the Director-General said. “I trust the responsible authorities will launch a thorough investigation into this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. The investigation must reveal whether this was a targeted attack on a journalist for his reporting. Press freedom is essential to democracy and attempts to silence the press must be countered effectively.”

Mario Gómez, a correspondent for the local newspaper El Heraldo de Chiapas for eight years, was shot dead by two gunmen on a motorcycle as he was leaving his home. Mr. Gómez covered general news in the region, including crime and violence. He had received threats related to his work on several occasions.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
