The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of radio host Teresa Aracely Alcocer in Ciudad Juárez, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, on 19 February.
“I condemn the murder of radio host Teresa Aracely Alcocer,” said the Director-General. “Crimes against media workers represent an attack on the fundamental human right of freedom of expression and must not go unpunished.”
Teresa Aracely Alcocer, publicly known as “Bárbara Greco”, was shot by unidentified assailants on a crossroad in her town. She was the host of a weekly astrology programme on local radio La Poderosa.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
