The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called for an investigation into the killing of television journalist Mirza Waseem Baig in the Punjab Province of Pakistan on 30 August.

“I condemn the murder of Mirza Waseem Baig,” said the Director-General. “I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. They need to send a clear message that attacks against journalists will not go unpunished to deter further violence against the media.”

Unidentified assailants shot Mirza Waseem Baig, a reporter with 92 News Channel television, outside his home. The journalist, who had recently reported on the criminal activities of local gangs, died during his transfer to hospital.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
