Director-General condemns killing of news photographer Mohamed Ben Khalifa in Libya
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has denounced the killing of Mohamed Ben Khalifa, a prominent news photographer and video journalist, in Tripoli, Libya.
“I condemn the killing of Mohamed Ben Khalifa,” said the Director-General. “I call on all those involved in the armed conflict in Libya to respect the Geneva Conventions recognizing the civilian status of journalists.”
Mohamed Ben Khalifa, a distinguished photo and video journalist who worked for several international news outlets, was killed while covering clashes between armed militia on 19 January.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
