Director-General condemns killing of journalist Zachary Stoner in the USA

13 June 2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today denounced the killing of journalist Zachary Stoner in Chicago (USA) on 30 May.

“I condemn the killing of Zachary Stoner,” said the Director-General. “I trust that the authorities will be able to determine if this crime is connected to the victim’s work on difficult issues. The murder of a journalist must not be allowed to go unpunished, in the interest of justice, freedom of expression and press freedom.”

Zachary Stoner was shot by unidentified assailants on the night of 29 to 30 May. He was a popular video blogger who interviewed up and coming rap and hip hop musicians as well as covering gang violence and issues of concern to local communities generally neglected by mainstream media.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
