Brief outline of the project
REFRA-SOS aims to mitigate flooding disaster risk in Cameroon by using the latest technologies available. The mitigation will rely on the integration of data from social media crowdsourcing (e.g Twitter, Flickr) and optical satellite imagery and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). By using this data, the project will develop a methodology for regular and near-real time flood monitoring using social media and satellite data and engage with local communities and youth for supporting behaviours towards flood risk reduction. The project will provide them with a better understanding of online resources to be consulted for the flood risk.
A series of workshops, training activities and project meetings will run for four years and involve experts and scientists from the Emergency Flood Control Project (PULCI), the Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Program, the French Development Agency (AFD), the National Observatory on Climate Change (ONACC), the Water For Life Cameroon NGO, the British Geological Survey (BGS), and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana.
