The UN Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare of the Government of Ghana organised an Expert Group Meeting on “Practical Strategies to Promote Social Integration: Lessons learned from existing policies and practices” from 17 – 19 November 2009, in Accra, Ghana, as part of the preparations for the 48th session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD), which took place in New York from 3 to 12 February 2010.

The concept of social integration, and how to achieve it, occupied a central position in the search for answers to the myriad of inter-related, global problems faced by nation states. The expert group assessed current policies, practices and lessons learned and made 24 recommendations which aligned with the need for stronger interventions at the policy level, and integration of equity and inclusion as an overarching theme and a goal that cuts across all sector policies.
