An Inclusive Ethical Framework for Research with People with Diverse Disabilities

Globally, a good number of ethical frameworks exist to guide researchers; however, inclusive frameworks remain scarce. This lack of inclusivity creates significant challenges when attempting to conduct authentic and ethical research with people with diverse disabilities. To address this gap, I have drafted this inclusive ethical framework. We welcome your feedback and insights to help refine this tool, which was presented last year at the Oxford University Colloquium.

Abstract
People with disabilities are often treated as objects in research, with ethical considerations being framed by researchers rather than shaped through the lived experiences of individuals with diverse disabilities. This imbalance overlooks the fundamental principles of ethical research, which should prioritize inclusivity, autonomy, and dignity and ownership. This study presents an inclusive ethical framework designed and validated with and by individuals with diverse disabilities. The process began with participants identifying the ethical challenges they faced in conducting the research. Through a participatory approach, they collectively reviewed available frameworks and developed an inclusive framework to ensure that ethical research practices align with their dignity, rights, and lived experiences. This framework guides researchers to foster more respectful, equitable, and inclusive engagement with people with disabilities in academic studies.
