Youthinkgreen is an international non-profit youth movement established in Berlin in 2009 with a global outreach in more than 15 countries worldwide. In Egypt, since 2013 Youthinkgreen has been educating youth on sustainability strategies and empowering them to hone their entrepreneurial skills on local challenges with long term and global impacts. They advocate lifestyles that value diversity, intergenerational equity and access to opportunities in tune with the planet’s natural resources. Their programmes support the development of young role models who offer a perspective on what a youth-driven sustainable society could look like.
Sustainability and Entrepreneurship Youth Programme
The annual Sustainability and Entrepreneurship Youth Programme brings together around 40 graduates and students from diverse backgrounds to learn about global sustainability-related topics relevant to Egypt. Experts guide them in developing innovative solutions that could be turned into green businesses and help develop the green market and economy. The last three programmes considered the topics of renewable energy, sustainable cities, EFW Nexus and Water sustainability. Workshop participants and experts discussed how sustainability affected society, the environment and the economy.
Central to the programme is the summer camp held in one of Egypt’s cities where young people spend 2 to 3 weeks learning about modern entrepreneurial skills. Participants take part in interactive workshops, debates, site visits, sustainability-related activities, recreational activities and pitching sessions. At the end of the programme participants pitch their projects and the NGO teams up with incubators and accelerators to develop the projects into successful start-ups and help them enter the market. Two projects from the first camp made it to advanced stages of implementation and all six projects from the second camp received acceleration and mentorship from partners.
In 2017, for the fourth year in a row, youthinkgreen Egypt is organizing its Sustainability and Entrepreneurship Youth Programme, tackling the topic of clean entrepreneurial innovations in industrial waste management, in partnership with the Egyptian National Cleaner Production Centre. The programme started in April 2017 and is expected to last until September 2017. Youthinkgreen Egypt plans to develop further by forming partnerships with new local, regional and global stakeholders.
