Online courses to promote disaster risk reduction awareness

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is using innovative approaches and technology-assisted tools for mainstreaming environment and sustainability in education. In 2015, UNEP through its Global Universities Partnership on Environment for Sustainability (GUPES), and the Cologne University of Applied Sciences (CUAS), Germany, in partnership with the Center for Natural Resources and Development and Eye on Earth Initiative, launched the first MOOC on Disasters and Ecosystems: Resilience in a Changing Climate to promote disaster risk reduction awareness.

The MOOC brought this specific knowledge to more than 12,000 registered learners across the world within a few months. Building on this success, UNEP continues developing MOOCs covering other environmental subjects, including Marine Litter, SIDS and Climate Change Adaptation, and others.
