The famous Russian singer Zarifa Mgoyan, known as Zara, was appointed UNESCO Artist for Peace in December 2016, in light of her commitment throughout her musical career, to promoting inclusion in particular of children and adults with disabilities. In the Russian Federation, she is engaged in a wide range of charitable activities through the Step Towards Charity Foundation, aiming to support children with disabilities. 

Of Kurdish origin and raised in Armenia, she also supports UNESCO’s action in favor of indigenous languages. In her capacity as UNESCO Artist for peace, she promotes inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities through education, sciences, culture, communication and information.
