Recognized for her work to create an eco-system of entrepreneurship and social innovation for scientists, technologists and engineers in the Middle East and beyond, Dr Hayat Sindi was appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in October 2012.
Dr Sindi is the first woman from the Gulf to earn a PhD in biotechnology, studying at King’s College London, the University of Cambridge, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. Through all of this, she promoted scientific progress as a way to create a better quality of life for the most deprived. Since 2007, she is the Director of Diagnostic for All, a non-profit initiative that creates low-cost diagnostic devices designed for the developing world.
As Founder and Chair of the Institute for Imagination and Ingenuity (i2institute) launched in 2011 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, she aims to give every scientist, technologist and engineer the opportunity to fulfill their potential through the promotion of science education and innovation to young people.
