Highlights

  • The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, H.E. Lech Walesa, former President of the Republic of Poland, an emblematic European figure and a promoter of human rights and democracy, discussed the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals with Ms Liv Torres, Executive Director of Nobel Peace Centre of Oslo.
  • The launch of the 2017/8 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report was held during the 39th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO. The Report highlights the shared responsibility and accountability of governments, schools, teachers, parents and private actors for the provision of inclusive, equitable and quality education, and puts forward concrete recommendations that will help build stronger education systems. The event brought together over 120 stakeholders from the education community, including Ministers of Education and UNESCO country delegations.
  • Two ministerial panel debates explored the different processes, mechanisms or instruments established by governments to promote accountability and transparency, including through public monitoring and reporting. They also examined how greater accountability can improve financing for education, and how to move the Education 2030 agenda forward.
