Countries are not going to meet any of the global education commitments by 2030, shows the first official monitoring Report for the new global education goal, having devastating consequences for development. The 2016 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, UNESCO, shows that, on current trends, contrary to global commitments for 2030, universal primary education will be achieved in 2042; universal lower secondary completion in 2059; and universal upper secondary completion in 2084.

“A fundamental change is needed in the way we think about education’s role in global development, because it has a catalytic impact on the well-being of individuals and the future of our planet,” said UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova. “Now, more than ever, education has a responsibility to be in gear with 21st century challenges and aspirations, and foster the right types of values and skills that will lead to sustainable and inclusive growth, and peaceful living together.” Bit.ly/sdg4all
