In 2017, after three devastating years of occupation, the Old City of Mosul was completely destroyed, its population exiled and its cultural life silenced. Following the city’s liberation, UNESCO launched the flagship initiative to “Revive the Spirit of Mosul”, putting education, heritage and culture at the heart of the city’s recovery and reconstruction.
The first concrete steps in the restoration of the Al-Nouri Mosque is visible. After completing the demining and cleaning up of the site, the stabilization of the remaining structures is underway.
