Education Sector

We coordinate and promote the implementation of the Education 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean, supporting Member States ensure the right to education.

What is our goal? That in our region no one is left behind, and that all people receive a humanistic, transformative education, oriented to develop the behaviors, the values and the knowledge required to transform the world in order to make it sustainable for future generations.

    How do we do it? We support Member States and promote the establishment of national and/or regional agreements and initiatives that promote progress towards the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

    Culture Sector

    We work to promote the value of diversity, a culture where human rights and peaceful co-existence is the basis of sustainable development. We center our endeavor on safeguarding cultural heritage and fostering the creativity, on the recognition and respect for the diversity of cultural expression and the promotion of arts and culture for social change. Particularly, our activities are focused on the integration of heritage, arts and cultural diversity in education.

    Considering the junction between the Education and Culture sectors, we seek to open a fruitful dialogue among Chilean authorities, specialist, educators, artists, bearers, mediators and cultural managers with stakeholders from other Latin American and Caribbean nations, regarding cultural policies that highlight the potentialities offered by the cultures, arts and heritage for the educational systems of the region.

    Communication & Information Sector

    UNESCO Santiago strives to foster freedom of expression and media diversity pluralism, media development, and access to information and knowledge in line with UNESCO’s mandate to “promote the free flow of ideas by word and image”.

    Moreover, the Communication and Information Sector combats online hate speech, as well as disinformation and misinformation through awareness raising initiatives, steady monitoring, capacity-building activities, and technical support to Member States. UNESCO also supports universal access to information and knowledge through promoting Open Solutions, including Open Educational Resources, access for marginalized people, and multilingualism in the cyberspace. In addition, the Sector coordinates UNESCO’s inter-sectoral work on Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a view to addressing the impact of AI on the fields of competence of UNESCO.

    We provide technical support on the following topics that we work on various projects:

    Natural Sciences

    UNESCO Santiago fosters the strengthening science and engineering education at all levels, and research capacity needs to be built to allow countries to develop their own solutions to their specific problems and to play their part in the international scientific and technological arena. Linking science to society, public understanding of science and the participation of citizens in science are essential to creating societies where people have the necessary knowledge to make right decisions and to participate in the stimulating world of discovery.
     
    Scientific knowledge of the Earth, knowledge of ecosystems and biodiversity, and the interaction of humans with ecosystems are important to help us understand how to manage our planet for a peaceful and sustainable future. Also, Indigenous knowledge systems developed with long and close interaction with nature, complement knowledge and learning systems based on modern science.
     
    Among the lines of action of the sector are:

    • Biosphere Reserves, Geoparks and UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites as educational settings

    Social and Human Sciences Sector

    UNESCO intervenes to accompany its Member States and all its partners to understand better and address the challenges of our more and more diversified societies, particularly through its programs on management of social transformations, Youth and the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence which include, inter alia, initiatives for democracy and global citizenship, intercultural dialogue, peace-building.
     
    Lasting peace rests on a complex and fragile web of daily practises embedded in local settings and the most ephemeral encounters that individuals and communities creatively maintain out of the conviction that they constitute the sustainable conditions for living together in dignity and shared prosperity. At a time of increasing global challenges and threats, such as inequality, exclusion, violence and sectarianism worsened by local tensions and conflicts which undermine humanity’s cohesion, learning to live together and fostering rights, inclusion and non-discrimination among all members of the global community becomes more critical than ever before.
     
    Among the lines of action of the sector are:
