Regional Consultation and Expert Group Meeting on Developing an International Guidance Framework for Professional Teaching Standards
A regional consultation to develop an International Guidance Framework for Professional Teaching Standards with a focus on Asia and the Pacific region will be held in New Delhi from 9 to 11 October 2019. This consultation will be a joint collaboration between UNESCO, Ministry of Human Resource Development, National Coalition for Education and the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030.
The International Framework hopes to achieve three goals, the first of them being to reach a common understanding of teaching and teacher quality. Secondly, it hopes to assure the quality of teacher education by describing competency levels for the different stages in a teacher’s career and finally, it hopes to spell out governance and accountability mechanisms in order to ensure that quality teacher education is actually provided.
The main purpose of the regional consultation is to gather inputs from key education stakeholders and discuss the state of implementation of teaching standards in different regions and countries. These stakeholders will be asked to review the evolving guidance framework and to make recommendations for local adaptations of it. The attendees of the consultation will include teachers, teacher organizations, education planners, teaching regulatory councils, policymakers and researchers. Following the regional consultation, a group of international experts will review the input generated and further refine the international framework.
