About the Office in Ha Noi

Who we are

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialised international agency that was founded in 1945. Through its activities within the fields of education, social and natural science, culture and communication and information, UNESCO is actively contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals of the United NationsUNESCO’s Medium Term Strategy 2014-2020 and the 2017-2021 One Strategic Plan of the UN in Viet Nam.

Among its 50 field offices operating around the world, the UNESCO Office in Ha Noi coordinates international cooperation in the Organization’s key strategic action areas (education, sciences, culture, communication and information). UNESCO Ha Noi has supported the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam since 1999, starting with the Education and Culture sectors and now expanding to contribute comprehensive assistance to the country in all action areas.

What we do

UNESCO’s goal is to contribute to empowering the people of Viet Nam, especially the disadvantaged population groups, to fully participate in and benefit from development.

Priority programmes in the field of education include Education for All (EFA) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Initiatives include ongoing support for a nationwide network of Community Learning Centres (CLCs), as well as development of education materials covering such themes as environmental protection and preservation, gender equality and women, community health, HIV/AIDs and the role of Information and Communication Technologies in education.

Within the fields of culture and sciences UNESCO supports international efforts to protect world heritage and preserve cultural and natural diversity. In partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Information, and together with other local and international counterparts, UNESCO works to protect the tangible and intangible components of cultural diversity and preserve biodiversity.

UNESCO also recognizes the role of information and knowledge as one of the driving forces for sustainable development and is committed to facilitating diversity of content, access and civil empowerment through information and communication technology usage in Viet Nam. Initiatives include digital preservation, community radio development, the promotion of access to information and communication technologies and training of media professionals.

Where we work

In addition to a strong involvement in central policy level work, UNESCO Ha Noi’s current programme focuses on nationwide activities as well as geographically targeted interventions in line with recognised scientific, cultural preservation and educational needs.
