Conference "What is the place of jazz and improvised music within contemporary music in the Maghreb?”

Within the framework of the celebration of the International Jazz Day and the project “Music for sustainable development in Morocco and Tunisia”, the UNESCO Maghreb Office, Anya-Music for All and the Hiba Foundation will organize, on 30 April 2021, from 3.00 to 5.00 p.m. (UTC), an online conference entitled “What is the place of jazz and improvised music within contemporary music in the Maghreb?”. This conference will bring together artists and festival directors from Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia in order to discuss this question.

Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages - UNPFII 2021 Side Event

The United Nations General Assembly Resolution (Ref.: A/74/396, 18 December 2019) proclaimed the International Decade of Indigenous Languages starting from 2022 to 2032. The UNGA (A/RES/74/135) invited UNESCO to serve as the lead agency for the International Decade, in collaboration with UNDESA and other relevant agencies. The Resolution also invited Member States to consider establishing national mechanisms with adequate funding for the successful implementation of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL2022-2032) in partnership with indigenous peoples, and invites indigenous peoples, as custodians of their own languages, to initiate and develop appropriate measures for the implementation of the International Decade. The side-event will be an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing consultations on the elaboration of the Global Action Plan for the organization of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, share good practices that Indigenous People have implemented, and propose steps to be taken to curb the critical loss of indigenous languages. Online course to promote UNESCO’s new Regional Convention for the Recognition of Studies, Diplomas and Degrees

With the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the new UNESCO Regional Convention on the Recognition of Studies, Diplomas and Degrees in Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as to promote its ratification in the countries of the region, the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) will launch the Course on the Regional Convention for the Recognition of Studies, available from 21 April on the educational platform Campus IESALC.

The Almaty Forum will be held online on 30 April 2021, in Russian with simultaneous translation into English, as part of the general celebration, from 14-30 to 16-00 (UTC + 6) and will bring together representatives of Russian speaking countries to discuss the three main thematic priorities in and propose a summary at the main event in Namibia: The viability of the news media Transparency of online platforms Media and Information Literacy skills in times of disinformation and hate speech.

Celebration of World Day of the Portuguese Language in Brazil

The United Nations proclaimed World Portuguese Language Day in November 2019. This virtual event will be the first time that representatives of the Member States of the Commonwealth of Portuguese-language Countries (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa - CPLP) will celebrate this international day in Brasilia on 5 May 2021. "The recognition of that date by UNESCO, with the establishment of a World Day of the Portuguese Language, represented an important step for our community in the appreciation and projection of our common language on an international scale." - Ambassador Francisco Ribeiro Telles, Executive Secretary of CPLP.

Celebrate your Trash Hacks: Webinar for sharing, inspiring and calling for change

in September 2020, on the occasion of World Cleanup Day, UNESCO, with kind support from the Government of Japan, launched the global campaign Trash Hack encouraging young people to take action to promote sustainable development, reflect on their actions, and share their learnings.   This online event presents an opportunity for UNESCO Associated Schools, FEE Eco-schools and all others involved in the campaign to come together and celebrate their Trash Hacks, share some good practice examples, encourage others to act. The event will occur one week before the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (17 -19 May).
