Conference "What is the place of jazz and improvised music within contemporary music in the Maghreb?”

Within the framework of the celebration of the International Jazz Day and the project “Music for sustainable development in Morocco and Tunisia”, the UNESCO Maghreb Office, Anya-Music for All and the Hiba Foundation will organize, on 30 April 2021, from 3.00 to 5.00 p.m. (UTC), an online conference entitled “What is the place of jazz and improvised music within contemporary music in the Maghreb?”. This conference will bring together artists and festival directors from Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia in order to discuss this question.

Ethics Teacher Training Course

Organized by the Bioethics Programme at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, in partnership with the Vilnius University, this Ethics Teacher Training Course offers a unique opportunity for participants from all over the world, but especially from Lithuania and other countries in the region, to engage in one-week long training designed to enhance their teaching capacities in ethics. <br /><br/>The Ethics Teacher Training Course (ETTC) is designed to reinforce the capacity of experts and educators to teach ethics at various academic faculties and institutions, in order to expend and improve the quality ethics education around the world. <br /><br />After graduating from the course, the participants will have acquired: <br />• Special skills and methodological approaches of teaching ethics; <br />• Various means and resources for teaching ethics;<br />• Feedback and evaluation from the trainers on the demonstrations of the acquired teaching skills.<br /><br />The Ethics Teacher Training Course will be delivered by a team of experts with extensive international experience in ethics education, as well as the local experts involved in teaching ethics at Vilnius University.<br /><br />Participants should have a Master’s degree (in areas such as law, medicine, philosophy, ethics, or social sciences), preferably hold a University faculty appointment to teach courses, and have good command of English language. <br /><br />Persons who want to register should submit a registration form to Mr Irakli Khodeli at Bioethics Section of UNESCO (i.khodeli@unesco.org), as early as possible, and before the September 24 deadline. Applicants should also include a letter of intent (600 words) explaining why they wish to participate in the course and how they expect to benefit from it. <br /><br />While the participation in the course is free, the participants are expected to cover their room and board expenses in the duration of the training. 2nd UN Inter-Agency Meeting on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity

The 2nd Un Inter-agency meeting on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity will discuss the implementation strategy of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity in Vienna, on 22-23 November 2012.<br/>The event will be co-hosted by the United Nations Department for Public Information (UNDPI), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). <br /><br />The decision to organize this meeting follows the endorsement of the UN Plan of Action on The Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity by the UN Chief Executives Board on 12 April 2012. The Plan was prepared during the 1st UN Inter-Agency Meeting on this issue, convened by the Director General of UNESCO at the request of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). <br /><br /> <br />

Regional meeting on “Capacity-building and awareness-raising on the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property” for the South-East European region

This meeting, developed within the framework of UNESCO’s new global initiative, “Culture: a Bridge to Development”, aims at building regional and local capacities in South-East Europe (participating countries are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey), bringing together 40 experts and professionals from the region. Beneficiaries from the training will be high level professionals from the region, representing experts from the ministries of culture, ministries of interior, the judiciary system, cultural sites or institutions challenged by situations of illicit trafficking, and media professionals. <br /><br/>The meeting, conducted by a pool of international experts and professionals, will last 3 days and be structured around two trainings (a legal and an operational one) with the following modules: assessment of international and national legislations; Modalities for return and restitution; Training on the use of operational tools, especially for museums and cultural institutions; Police and customs role in the fight against illicit trafficking; Media and Awareness raising. The main objectives of the meeting are: ratification and effective implementation of the 1970 Convention and other relevant instruments on the fight against illicit traffic and the restitution of cultural objects; effective use of legal and operational tools to safeguard and preserve cultural heritage; development of national capacities for the protection and conservation of movable cultural property; and, awareness raised on the need of fighting against the illicit trafficking of cultural property. <br /><br />The meeting is part of a series of training sessions also organized by UNESCO in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, to strengthen the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural objects in UNESCO Member States. <br />

Meeting of Education for All (EFA) Steering Committee

The Steering Committee advises on issues such as recommending the themes of the future editions of the GMR as well as preparing and following up the EFA High-Level Forum and the Global EFA Meeting. The present meeting is taking place before the first Global EFA Meeting (GEM).<br/>The main purpose of the GEM will be to critically assess progress towards EFA based on the Global Monitoring Report and regional and national reports, and to agree on tangible actions for follow-up. The outcomes of the GEM will guide the agenda of the High Level Forum (HLF).

8th World Conference on Sport, Education and Culture

The 8th World Conference on Sport, Education and Culture is co-organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and UNESCO. The event, to be opened by the President of the IOC and a high-level UNESCO representative, will bring together around 500 people from governments, UN agencies and NGOs to highlight the power of sport as a mediator for social and economic development.<br /><br/>Key discussion topics include the value of sport to civil society, education and culture, most notably with respect to reinforcing family structures and building community. With this in mind, the Conference will be held under the banner of the UN International Year of Cooperatives, which aims to raise public awareness of the invaluable contributions of cooperative enterprises to poverty reduction, employment generation and social inclusion. <br /><br />Building on the success of the 2010 edition of the Conference, the engagement of young people will be a key outcome. In order to ensure the broad-based participation of youth leaders in the event, targeted working group sessions will be organized for young people to debate practical ways of using sport, education and cultural activities to aid local and national development.
