Regional Challenges

In terms of Human Development Index (2017), the countries in non-Sahel West Africa region lag behind the world. Conflicts, exacerbated by the intensification of violence (such as criminal cultism, violent extremism, and farmer and herdsmen crisis) as well as limited national integration, lack of governance in certain areas, and increased insecurity across geopolitical zones, are constraining the regional economic growth and social development. So human rights, gender equality, anti-discrimination, and inclusion are thematic issue to be addressed in this region.
At the same time, the region has a large young population, which is still growing fast. They are the most vulnerable, an easy target for manipulation, and fuel for violence, but also a great opportunity for change, if well empowered.

The Social and Human Sciences Sector of UNESCO Abuja Office supports its Member States in knowledge production for sustainable social transformations while infusing universal values of justice, freedom and human dignity. Considering the youth as a key actor for change towards peaceful and inclusive societies in the region, the Sector’s activities support:

  • Youth Engagement and Active Citizenship
  • Management of Social Transformations through Evidence Weighted Policies
  • Culture of Peace and Intercultural Dialogue for the Rapprochement of Cultures
  • Sports Values Promotion for Inclusion and Peaceful Coexistence
