Regional Challenges
To promote the global agenda for Sustainable Development, the Communication and Information Sector of UNESCO Abuja Office is committed to building knowledge societies and free flow of ideas by word and image.
The sector’s mandate comprises, supporting freedom of expression and media development both online and offline, assisting various community radios in the region, and bridging barriers to accessing information and knowledge, which are addressed by the promotion of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Education and Open Educational Resources (OERs).
Activities of the sector focus on the following areas:
- Strengthening Press Freedom and Journalists Safety for freedom of expression;
- Enhancing pluralistic media and promotion of community media, youth participation in radio, media and information literacy, and gender-sensitive indicators of media;
- Building knowledge society and promoting the Development of Mobile Applications for Sustainable Development;
- Supporting the preservation of deteriorating print and audiovisual heritage through the promotion of free flow of ideas by word and image.
