Dear Members of the Executive Board,
As our Organization and the international community are joining forces to cope with the devastating effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), I would like to begin this letter by wishing all of you and your loved ones good health. My thoughts go out to the victims and those who are battling to overcome, treat and prevent the spread of the virus.
As the intellectual organization of the United Nations system, UNESCO’s contribution is more vital today than ever before. I have exchanged views with some of you over the past few days with the aim of finding innovative ways to ensure continuity in our work. COVID-19 has negatively affected our school systems, the world economy, our health and even the very basic fabrics of life as we know it. In conformity with the constitutional mandate of our Organization, we should remain active particularly now that the world needs UNESCO most.
I am therefore proposing that the Organization finds the way to ensure virtual connectivity among the Executive Board members. I have discussed this urgent matter with the Director-General who has assured that the relevant services within our Organization will provide assistance in order to enable such essential connectivity. As an urgent solution is being sought, any suggestions from Member States to help materialize this proposal would be most welcome, preferably before Friday 10 April 2020. I remain available and may be contacted at any time by email (pres.exb@unesco.org).
Thank you in advance for your continuous support.
Yours sincerely,
HE Mr Agapito Mba Mokuy
