World Oceans Day 2016
World Oceans Day (WOD), held every June 8th, is the United Nations-recognized day of ocean celebration and action. People all over the world organize celebrations to support action to protect the ocean.
For the WOD 2016, IOC will engage in four separate activities:
(1) Half-day event at UNESCO HQ with Revelle Lecture and Thematic Round Tables
(2) Youth event “UNESCO Campus” organized in parallel to the IOC Executive Council
(3) Exhibition space at UNESCO HQ for IOC programmes and partner institutions wishing to display materials
(4) Launch of the World Oceans Day Online Portal
10:00-11:30 – UNESCO Campus:
"Healthy Ocean, Healthy Planet: Plastic Pollution"
14:30-15:30 – Roger Revelle Memorial Lecture:
The Roger Revelle Memorial Lecture Series – a traditional element of IOC Executive Councils – will be integrated into the WOD programme for 8 June. The 2016 Revelle Lecture will be themed around ocean acidification and presented by Prof. Ken Caldeira (Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution for Science)
15:30-16:30 – Thematic Round Table:
"Mobilizing society and stakeholders for effective ocean science communication"
16:30-17:30 – High Level Panel:
"Moving from agreement to action: Implementing global frameworks on the road to 2030 through ocean science and governance"
