Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the management of water resources in Central America – Honduras

Central America is home to 40 million people of whom 70% live on the Pacific coast where only 30% of the water resources are available. Strengthening institutional and technical capacities of the entities in charge of water resources are considered as key factors to improve water governance.

In this regard, there is an urgent demand to use technology to better effect, which would assist stakeholders in better coordinating the design and support of operations, management, and decision making for sound water resources governance.

The UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP) will provide a training on its Water Information Network System (WINS) to Honduran officials and water-related stakeholders on 23 February 2017 at the Ministry of Energy, Natural Resources, Environment and Mines (Honduras). The training is aimed at fostering national human resources with technical capacity using geospatial tools (GIS) for the management of water resources.

IHP-WINS is an open source and open access platform that combines geolocalized data. This user-friendly, interactive tool can be used by a wide variety of stakeholders, to explore the data and generate customized maps. It was developed to also assist Member States in monitoring and implementing the Sustainable Development Goal to "ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all" (SDG6).
