UNESCO, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP), will host an interactive discussion on the theme of ‘Promoting Dialogue and Reducing Insecurity’, at the ‘SDG 16 Conference’ in Rome, Italy, on 28 May 2019.

Bringing together high-level decision makers, practitioners and experts, the session will reflect on different national approaches to, and uses of, dialogue, as well as exploring what should be done to make it a more effective tool for creating sustainable, inclusive and just societies.

The session will explore practical strategies for developing stronger data that can make dialogue initiatives more needs driven and evidence-based, as well as highlighting good practices for demonstrating the crosscutting impact of dialogue in advancing a wide range of other Sustainable Development Goals. The discussion will draw upon UNESCO’s ongoing work, undertaken in partnership with the Institute of Economics and Peace, to measure the enabling conditions for effective dialogue, which will strengthen the work of a wide range of UN initiatives on cross-cultural dialogue, mediation and reconciliation.

Expected participants include:
H.E. Mr Hassan Hajji: Minister of Justice of Somalia
H.E. Dr Ernst-Peter Brezovszky: Ambassador and Director of UNESCO Unit, Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs
Ms Rebeca Arias: UN Resident Coordinator in Guatemala
