Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) has a particularly great importance and potential for SIDS. The strong cultural connection to the sea and their vast sea territories are a specificity shared by all of them.
UNESCO will organise a Parallel Event on UCH and SIDS at the Development Bank of Samoa in Apia on 3 September 2014 on the occasion of the SIDS Conference (Apia, Samoa, 1 - 4 September 2014).
This event will bring together government officials, underwater archaeologists, representatives of the dive community, museum managers, and other stakeholders in order to discuss challenges and opportunities faced by SIDS in the UCH management for sustainable development.
SAMOA Pathway Draft Outcome Document of the SIDS Conference invites SIDS to consider, if they have not done so, becoming parties to the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (Paragraph 58. j).
Ahead of this Parallel Event, the introductory course of the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) International Training Programme will be held on 1 September 2014. The course will be facilitated by Dr Bill Jeffery, UCH expert from Australia. The course will be attended by students specialising in archaeology at the National University of Samoa (NUS) and be open to SIDS youth delegates.
