The UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development honours and awards individuals, institutions and organizations for outstanding ESD projects and programmes. Funded by the Government of Japan, it was awarded for the first time by the Director-General of UNESCO in 2015 to three organizations from Germany, Guatemala and El Salvador, and Indonesia. The winners of the second edition in 2016 are: the Centre for Community Regeneration and Development (CCREAD-Cameroon) from Cameroon, the National Union of Students (NUS-UK) from the United Kingdom, and the Okayama ESD Promotion Commission from Japan.
In order to strengthen the links between the six ESD Prize laureates of 2015 and 2016 and further promote their projects, UNESCO will organize – in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Japan, the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO (JNCU), the Okayama ESD Promotion Commission, Okayama City and Okayama University – a follow-up event in Japan, back-to-back with the Okayama ESD Forum planned for January 2017, and the fellowship programme* of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO..
