UNESCO calls for concerted effort for Peace through Education at the Research Consortium
The preamble of the “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” defines the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Agenda as a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity, and states unequivocally that “it also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom”.
It goes on to add “we are determined to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development.” From this perspective peace and development is a continuum, neither possible without the other. Accordingly peace and peacebuilding is included as both a standalone goal (SDG number 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions) and issues of peace, conflict, and violence are mainstreamed into the other SDGs, not least in Goal 4: Education.
