This training workshop, organized jointly with the World Customs Organization, will be held in Dakar from 10 to 13 December and will bring together customs officials from West and Central Africa. It is part of a subregional process to combat illicit trafficking of cultural property in the region. It aims to strengthen the capacity of customs officers and at the same time to create an ad hoc coordination system so that countries can share information as effectively as possible.
The training workshop on the prevention of illicit trafficking of cultural property for West and Central African customs is organized by UNESCO's Regional Office in Dakar in partnership with the World Customs Organization (WCO) and Senegalese Customs. This training of trainers session is a first of its kind and follows a regional awareness workshop on the role of customs in the protection of cultural heritage organized by the WCO in Ouagadougou in May 2018. The challenge now will be to act directly on customs capacity building and at the same time create a system of ad hoc coordination and information sharing between countries for greater efficiency in day-to-day operations. During this training, museum professionals, heritage experts, academics, customs officers, security forces and police will be involved in order to train all stakeholders on the central role of customs in the protection of tangible heritage and to provide the necessary tools for officers operating in the field.
This workshop also strengthens UNESCO's partnerships with strategic actors, particularly the WCO, by implementing concrete activities that will initiate a real dynamic and test new approaches.
