UNESCO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Mozambique, National Directorate of Cultural Heritage and CAIRIM, the Centre for Underwater Archaeology, organizes the Training on Underwater Archaeology for African Countries, which will take place from December 2 to 13, 2019 in Mozambique Island (Mozambique). The training shall contribute to facilitate the implementation of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.
The proposed two-week intensive training will thus teach participants the core principles of underwater cultural heritage management, research and conservation in theoretical as well as practical trainings. The objective is to stimulate effective collaboration and cooperation in the region. Participants will work up to a maximum water depth of 20 meters. Twelve participants from Angola, Cabo Verde, Cote-d‘Ivoire, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, and Togo, will be guided by three experts from Brussels, Portugal and South Africa.
