Thematic Day on Education at the Climate COP 22
UNESCO organizes a series of side events during the thematic day on Education at the UNFCCC – Climate COP 22 in Marrakesh.
Together with UN partners and other organizations, UNESCO organizes side events both for negotiators and for civil society, including:
- 1.15 p.m. to 2.45 p.m., Blue Zone, Pacific Room: “Education - A key driver to scale-up climate action”. In the presence of the Director-General of UNESCO and HRH Princess Lalla Hasna of Morocco (tbc), this high-level panel discussion will bring together environment and education’s ministers and international organizations to discuss how education can enhance the implementation of the climate agenda and INDCs. This event will also see the launch of a guidance document for policy makers and national focal points for Action for Climate Empowerment, developed by UNESCO and UNFCCC, as well as the Global Education Monitoring Report Planet chapter which looks at how education enables individuals to better cope with, and reduce their vulnerability to, the dangers associated with climate change. It will be preceded by a press conference.
- 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., Green Zone, Room 7: “Sustainability starts with educators”. This roundtable, open to the general public, will discuss the role of teachers and educators, as well as of educators’ organizations, in promoting a sustainable lifestyle.
- 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., Blue Zone, Pacific Room: “Leaving No One Behind in Climate Change Education”. This event will showcase and discuss steps in promoting both formal and non-formal climate change education and responding to specific needs of vulnerable groups, in particular those with disabilities, indigenous peoples and refugees.
In addition, UNESCO will organize several discussion rounds at its Pavilion located in the Green Zone, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., inter alia on water education, green skills and green economies, and the role of teachers.
UNESCO will also be present all day at the booth for SDG 4 on Education, located in the Blue Zone.
