Youmna Tabet (y.tabet@unesco.org)The Technical meeting to reflect on the Recovery of the World Heritage site of Palmyra will bring together representatives from the Directorate General for Antiquities and Museums in Syria, Syrian and international experts as well as UNESCO’s institutional partners. It aims at brainstorming with a small group of multidisciplinary international experts on the most appropriate approach for the recovery of the site of Palmyra, taking stock of the current situation and on-going initiatives at the site.
The meeting is closed and will be open to delegations from 5 p.m. only.
The Technical meeting will act as a platform to reflect on, and discuss the recovery of Palmyra, as a World Heritage property. It will take into consideration the principles of the World Heritage Convention, while addressing community needs and aspirations. It will also consider the application of international charters and recommendations, including the Warsaw Recommendation on Recovery and Reconstruction of Cultural Heritage (May, 2018), with a focus on the preservation of the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the Site of Palmyra. The reflection on the recovery of the property will integrate the contribution of cultural heritage recovery in strengthening the resilience of communities.
