The purpose of this tool, according to Astrid Hollander, Program on Education for Sustainable Development at OREALC/UNESCO Santiago, is "to integrate disaster risk reduction into policies of the education sector, curricula and assessments. It also seeks to give to those developing public policies, governments, NGOs and UN agencies, a methodology that facilitates this integration."

To further develop this tool, experts from Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic will meet for two days to present their considerations after pilot testing the guide. Their views will be shared in the working sessions to identify progress, challenges and recommendations to make this tool more effective.

In addition to the mentioned countries, UNICEF, UNESCO and the Emergency Management Agency Caribbean Disaster (CDEMA), will also participate in the meeting to offer their knowledge-how to enrich the work of the experts. The event will conclude with a discussion of next steps for improving the integration of the countries participating in prevention of natural disaster risk.
