Meeting in Kenya between senior underwater archaeologists, heritage managers and policy makers from various African countries to discuss the protection of underwater cultural heritage in Africa.
Africa’s underwater cultural heritage is an important cultural, educational and scientific asset, and has considerable potential for the development of sustainable tourism. The meeting in Malindi will stress the importance of ratifying the 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage for those UNESCO Member States not yet party, increase awareness about such heritage and its potential for tourism, and facilitate collaboration among African countries.
