Marion Desmurger (Email: m.desmurger@unesco.org)UNESCO Doha Cluster Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries (GCC) and Yemen and Oman National Commission for UNESCO are organizing a sub-regional workshop entitled “Strengthening the Memory of the World in the GCC” that is set to take place on 5-7 December 2016 in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.
The workshop will be one of the first initiatives in the region to set forth cooperation priorities among the countries of the GCC, with the following objectives:
(1) Present the Memory of the World Programme and UNESCO’s new normative instrument to sensitize governments on strategies towards documentary heritage preservation.
(2) Build capacities of Member States to prepare, submit or review nominations for inscription to the Memory of the World Register.
(3) Discuss initiative to launch a sub-Regional GCC Memory of the World Committee and present best practices to create National Memory of the World Committees.
(4) Reinforce regional cooperation through concrete actions and initiatives to promote and share knowledge about the Arab-Islamic civilization and preserve documentary heritage from the region.
