The conference aims at supporting the Member States of the Arab States region with the implementation and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in cities and urban communities through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Learning Cities.

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) is a GAP key partner and has been supporting the enhancement and integration of Education for Sustainable Development at local level by making use of the concept of learning cities. The GNLC is an international policy-oriented network providing inspiration, know-how and best practice. The Network supports the achievement of all seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 4 (‘Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’) and SDG 11 (‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’). The UNESCO GNLC supports and improves the practice of lifelong learning in the world’s cities by promoting policy dialogue and peer learning among member cities; forging links; fostering partnerships; providing capacity development; and developing instruments to encourage and recognize progress made in building learning cities.

To this end, UNESCO is organizing workshops for cities/municipalities in all five UNESCO regions between December 2016 and March 2018. The regional workshops/ meetings are a crucial element in accelerating sustainable solutions and scaling up ESD actions at local level, taking into account regional priorities in addressing sustainability issues, and the urban specificities in these regions. The provision of ESD training to cities and local authorities is expected to result in communities providing more and better sustainable development learning opportunities for their inhabitants. Considering UNESCO’s comparative advantage in the field of competence, the proposed Regional Conference on “Learning to Live Sustainably in Cities in the Arab Region” will be carried out through an inter-sectoral and multi-sectoral approach.
